❔ Federal Reserve Questions and Answers

How does the Federal Reserve System help with Check Clearing?

Suppose you want to write a check for $32,000 to a contractor. Then after both my bank and the contractor’s bank have verified the validity of the check, $32,000 is removed from my bank’s deposits at the Fed and added to the contractor’s bank’s deposits at the Fed.

Lifecycle of a Check

Essentially, when you write a check to your contractor, your bank has to send money to the contractor’s bank. It does this by having the federal reserve system transfer the $32,000 from your bank’s DaF to the contractor’s bank’s DaF. The federal reserve system does this as a courtesy to the banks to support the payment system in the country.
